The North Pond Hermit

Troy and Hook sing the North Pond Hermit Song.

Troy and Hook sing the North Pond Hermit Song.

So this isn’t the best song I’ve ever written. But it’s the best song I wrote this week about a hermit. You can read all about the real North Pond HermitĀ HERE.

I’m a newspaper man by trade. I deal with facts and truth. But I’m also a lover of folk songs, ballads and legends. Ballads, sung by folks, passed around, changed here and there were the newspapers of their day. It only seemed fitting that this man, who has captured the imaginations of a whole state, get his own ballad. I didn’t work very long or very hard at this. It just kind of fell out onto the table.

Hello to the Van Gogh of banjo! I am a Waterville native who lives in Switzerland now. I just thought you’d like to know that your great song has gone international….my family and I are really moved by the Hermit’s incredible story and your wonderful song is a fitting tribute to this new Maine icon. We passed the song on to Swiss friends who are also following the Hermit. We have a camp on nearby Snow Pond so this whole situation seems just unbelievable to us. Thanks for a great song and for putting a smile on our faces! Sincerely, The Merkt Family
